Infectious disease is an illness resulting from an infection. Infectious disease can be caused by bacteria, viruses, or fungi, and spread directly or indirectly, from one person to another. Our infectious disease physician and staff are highly qualified and maintain their skills and knowledge of the latest medical techniques through ongoing training and education. We treat patients on both an inpatient and outpatient basis. Areas of practice include:
- General infectious diseases
- Hospital-acquired infections
- Infection control
- Antimicrobial stewardship
- HIV primary care
Hospital Infection Control
Dr. Antonella Fine, Physician Director of Hospital Infection Control, provides care for our inpatient units. She also sees patients in our Sturdy Plus specialty services office, which is located on the first floor of Sturdy Memorial Hospital.
Our infectious disease team helps to diagnose, treat, and manage difficult and complicated infections. We also work on antimicrobial stewardship, an important hospital program that promotes the appropriate use of antimicrobials, including antibiotics. Ensuring the proper use of and avoiding unnecessary exposure to antibiotics can improve patient outcomes, decrease the spread of infections, and reduce microbial resistance.
