Sturdy Memorial Introduces 64-Slice CT Scanning; Expands Diagnostics CapabiltiesThe Imaging Department at Sturdy Memorial is pleased to announce the addition of a new 64-slice CT scanner to its diagnostic imaging arsenal beginning in February 2008. CT, which stands for Computed Tomography, is a very sophisticated x-ray based test that generates images which depict exquisitely detailed human anatomy. The 64-slice scanner will enable skilled diagnostic radiologists to diagnose abnormalities and diseases with even greater sensitivity and specificity, and will expand the diagnostic capabilities of the modality. According to Gail Grootemaat, Director of Imaging, "The benefits of a 64-slice CT scanner are many, but most importantly it will keep us current with the rapidly evolving technological advances in CT. From the patient's perspective, this high-speed scanning, with the ability to cover large areas of the body very rapidly, will reduce breath-hold time and thereby improve patient comfort. We are offering our patients and physicians the best CT technology available." "The radiologists are very pleased to introduce the new 64-slice CT scanner at Sturdy Memorial Hospital," says Dr. Kenneth Kaplan, Chief of Radiology. "This state-of-the-art technology will provide the radiologists with the most advanced diagnostic tools available, and will expand our realm with regard to CT diagnosis, particularly with respect to coronary artery disease, cerebrovascular disease, peripheral vascular disease, and musculoskeletal trauma. The new scanning technology combines increased speed of image acquisition, decreased artifacts related to involuntary and voluntary patient movement, and the most advanced multi-planar and 3-D reconstruction capabilities. This, of course, translates into improved diagnostic imaging, which will enable the highest level of patient care, our ultimate goal." Of all the CT imaging studies that this new scanner will enrich, the greatest improvement will be seen in CT angiography (CTA). The scanner's superior spatial resolution, combined with short scan times, provides unparalleled visualization of the cardiovascular system. Sturdy Memorial Hospital is a full-service, independent, financially stable, non-profit acute care community hospital in Attleboro, Massachusetts. |
